SITE/LOCATIONIn 1998/1999 archaeologists found the remains of the foundation wall of a synagogue from the 19th century during preparation works for the new construction of the GALERIE AM SCHLOSSBERG in Sondershausen. Only a few metres away northwards a Jewish ritual bath was discovered, the equipment of which is supposed to go back far to the 13th century.
AWARDIn the year 2002 ROSCO is awarded the Thuringian price for the protection of historical monuments in the category “Archaeological monuments” for the preservation and the representation of the mykwa. On 7 June, 2002, former Thuringian Minister of Science, Research and Art, Professor Dr. Dagmar Schipanski, awarded the Thuringian price for the protection of historical monuments 2002 in the Thomaskirche in Erfurt. 28 proposals had been submitted from all rural municipalities. A jury decided the 9 prize-winners. The jury consisted of: the Director of the Art Division in the Thuringian Ministry of Science, Research and Art, Dr. Werner von Trützschler, the State Archaeologist Dr. Sigrid Dušek, the Managing Director of the Sparkassen-Kulturstiftung Hessen-Thüringen Dr. Thomas Wurzel, Dr. Stefan Pülz of the Thuringian State Administration Department in Weimar, Erdmute Neubert from the District Office Nordhausen, the Architect Dr. Matthias Gliemann from Mühlhausen, Dr. Lutz Krause from Weimar.
